Pigs oink, grunt, and squeal — and they're real chatterboxes, with scientists cataloguing more than 20 distinct pig calls. Soft rhythmic grunts are contented conversation while rooting for food; a sharp squeal can mean surprise, excitement, or 'that's my dinner!'

Mother pigs even 'sing' to their piglets: they grunt in a special rhythm while nursing, and each piglet learns its own name-grunt from mom. A pig's excited squeal is genuinely loud — up to 115 decibels, more than a motorcycle!

About the Pig

Pigs are domesticated animals descended from wild boars, raised primarily for meat. These intelligent omnivores have been living alongside humans for thousands of years. Pigs have an excellent sense of smell and are used in some regions to hunt for truffles. Contrary to popular belief, pigs are clean animals when given sufficient space. They are social creatures that form close bonds with each other and even with humans. Pigs communicate through various grunts, squeals, and body language. In the wild, they play an important role in ecosystems by turning over soil as they root for food.
