About the Calf
A calf is a young cow or bull, typically under one year old. At birth, calves usually weigh between 60 to 100 pounds and can stand within minutes. They have large, expressive eyes and soft, velvety coats that often differ in color from their adult counterparts. Calves are precocial animals, meaning they are relatively mature and mobile from the moment they're born. They begin to nibble on grass within their first week of life, although they primarily rely on their mother's milk for the first few months. The bond between a cow and her calf is strong, with distinct vocalizations used for communication.
