About the Red Squirrel

Red squirrels are small, arboreal rodents native to Eurasia and North America. Known for their reddish-brown fur and bushy tails, these agile creatures are primarily found in coniferous forests. Red squirrels are smaller than their gray cousins and are known for their territorial behavior. They are diurnal and spend much of their time foraging for seeds, nuts, fungi, and occasionally insects or bird eggs. Red squirrels are excellent climbers and can descend trees head-first thanks to their ability to rotate their ankles 180 degrees. They are important for forest ecosystems, playing a role in seed dispersal and serving as prey for various predators. Red squirrels do not hibernate but are active year-round, storing food caches for winter months.
