About the Common Otter

The common otter, also known as the European otter or Eurasian otter, is a semi-aquatic mammal native to Eurasia. These playful animals are excellent swimmers, with webbed feet, water-repellent fur, and the ability to close their ears and nostrils underwater. Otters are carnivorous, feeding primarily on fish, but also eating amphibians, crustaceans, and small mammals. They are known for their playful behavior, often seen sliding down muddy or snowy banks or juggling small rocks. Otters are intelligent animals and use tools, such as rocks, to open hard-shelled prey. They play an important role in aquatic ecosystems as top predators. Conservation efforts have helped otter populations recover in many areas after declines due to pollution and habitat loss.
