Andean Condor

Did you know: Andean condors can soar on air currents for hours without flapping their wings.

About the Andean Condor

The Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world, native to the Andes mountains of South America. These majestic birds have a wingspan that can reach up to 10 feet. Andean condors are primarily black with a distinctive white ruff around their necks and bald heads that can change color with their emotional state. They are scavengers, feeding mainly on carrion, and play a crucial role in their ecosystem by cleaning up dead animals. Andean condors are exceptionally long-lived, with a lifespan of up to 70 years in captivity. They mate for life and typically lay only one egg every two years, making population recovery slow. Due to habitat loss and persecution, Andean condors are considered vulnerable, and conservation efforts are ongoing to protect these impressive birds.
