Lion Cub

Did you know: Lion cubs are born with blue eyes that change to amber or brown as they grow older.

About the Lion Cub

Lion cubs are the young of lions, typically under two years of age. Born blind and helpless, cubs rely entirely on their mother for the first few months of life. They start to eat meat at about three months old but may continue to nurse for up to six months. Lion cubs are born with spotted coats that help camouflage them in the grass, which fade as they mature. They are incredibly playful, engaging in mock fights and chases that help develop crucial hunting and social skills. In a pride, cubs are often cared for communally, with lionesses nursing and protecting each other's offspring. Despite their cuteness, only about 1 in 8 cubs survives to adulthood in the wild due to various threats including predation and starvation.
